Negative Effects
Things you might consider when addressing in your letter:
Traffic
A proposed 1,500 bed correctional facility will dramatically increase at the already dangerous intersection of Hwy 11 and FM 697 (Ida Road). There will be a sizable increase in traffic associated with the movements of inmates, law enforcement personnel, legal and personal visitors, and facility employees.
Environmental
The proposed site was used by both Mrs. Tucker’s and Anderson Clayton as a waste disposal site for decades. The county needs to perform due diligence in assessing the level of contaminants still present before constructing another structure at this site. Among the known contaminants are: grease and oils, asphalt, concrete, and appliances and other equipment.
Also, has anyone considered the implications of water runoff from Post Oak Creek? The addition of a building structure and parking lots will dramatically impact the water shed of this area.
Do many folks know that the Animal Shelter buries the euthanized dogs and cats on the proposed building site?
Quality of life
Has anyone considered the impact of 24 hour/7 days per week/52 weeks per year high intensity lighting on the residents in the immediate area surrounding the site? No more need for yard lights!
Will the County construct the facility in a manner to reduce the visual impact of the facility?
Property values
Last, but certainly not least, has anyone considered the negative impact to the property values of those resident in proximity to the jail? Many of us have put a lot of money, perhaps our life savings, into our homes as an asset we can count on for our financial security down the road. What impact will the jail have on our property values?
Security
There’s an elementary school within one mile of the proposed site, as well as Hahn Park. Isn’t anyone concerned about the security of our children?
